What is a National Insurance Number (NIN)?
Everyone working in UK is required to have a National Insurance number (NIN). This number is used by employers to makes sure tax and National Insurance contributions are recorded against your name.
You can start work without one but you'll need to apply straightaway.

Who is entitiled to have a National Insurance Number?
You must have the right to work or study in the UK to get a National Insurance number.
How to obtain a National Insurance Number
The easiest and quicker way to apply for a NIN is online at nationalinsurance.uk.com (cost £100) ni-apply.org.uk (Cost £49) apply.nationalinsurancenumber.org.uk
You can also apply for a NI number at a Job Centre plus for free.
Contact the Jobcentre Plus, that will send you an application form, they may also ask you to go to an interview to confirm your identity.

You will be asked about your circumstances and why you need a National Insurance number.
They will also tell you which documents to bring to prove your identity, e.g.:
- Passport/identity card
- Residence permit
- Birth/adoption certificate
- Marriage/civil partnership certificate
- Driving licence
You need the proof of your English address and no residence permit if you are an European citizen.
Please note: If you are a non-EU National, Jobcentre Plus will send you an application pack. You must complete the relevant paperwork and return this to the address in the pack.

How long does it takes?
You will receive your confirmation letter by one or two week, but in the meanwhile you’ll have a temporary National Insurance Number.
